A Randomized, Double-Blind Study of the Efficacy of Tolpa Peat Preparation (TPP) in the Treatment of Recurrent Respiratory Tract Infections
Abstract:
TPP is a new immunomodulating drug of natural origin, registered in Poland for human use. 39 young patients (ages 16-22) participated in the randomized, double-blind study to assess the therapeutic efficacy of Tolpa Peat Preparation (TPP) in recurrent respiratory tract infections. TPP was administered orally in a dose of 5 mg daily for three weeks. During a 3-month follow-up period favorable results of the treatment were obtained in 14 of 20 TPP-treated patients and in 8 of 19 of the placebo patients. The therapeutic effects were seen even after the 6-month follow-up period. The phagocytic activity of granulocytes was significantly stimulated in the TPP-treated patients, but not in the placebo-treated patients. The results suggest that TPP is effective in the treatment of recurrent respiratory tract infections with undefined infectious etiology. No side effects were observed during treatment or during the 6-month observation period.
