Influence of Long-Term Administration of Tolpa Peat Preparation on Immune Reactivity in Mice. I. Morphological Changes in Thymus

Abstract:

In experiment I, 200 BALB/c mice were given TPP (Tolpa Peat Preparation) in drinking water in daily doses of 1, 10, and 50 mg/kg over a period of 3, 5, 7, 9, and 12 weeks. In experiment II, before the administration of TPP (as in experiment I), mice were immunized with a single dose i.p. of 0.2 cm3 of a 10% suspension of sheep erythrocytes (SRBC), i.e. 4x108 cells. Histopathological and ultrastructural studies have shown that in all three doses TPP causes morphological changes characteristic for thymus activity stimulation. However, the doses of 10 and 50 mg/kg administered for more than 7 weeks cause retrograde changes that do not occur after 1 mg/kg of TPP. The morphological changes were similar in the thymus of the immunized and non-immunized mice simultaneously receiving TPP.
